About
The homepage has the short introduction. This is the fuller record: roles, studies and the bits that don't fit on a timeline.
I'm Jia Hui, a software engineer based in Singapore.
I studied Computer Engineering at NUS and somehow ended up exploring quite a few different corners of tech along the way: software engineering, cybersecurity research at DSO, data analytics at Shopee, teaching, and now enterprise software and AI.
These days, I work at CPF Board, where I've moved from healthcare application systems into building and solutioning AI products. My work spans application development, cloud infrastructure, and the less glamorous parts of getting something from an idea into production.
Outside work, I tend to get curious about random problems and go quite far down the rabbit hole. Sometimes that turns into something useful. Sometimes I just learn a lot about something I absolutely did not need to know.
One of those rabbit holes became a Singapore FIRE calculator I started in 2025. I got it working just enough to satisfy myself, then never properly finished it. I'm trying to get better at that last part; this site is partly a record of what I've done, and partly an excuse to finish and write about more of the things I start.
Teaching programming and engineering at Tinkertanker and NUS also left me with an interest in education technology. I'd like to do more with tech for the social sector too, though I'm still figuring out what that looks like. If you're working on something interesting in either space, feel free to HMU :)
Lately, I've been digging up some of my old writing, from essays and thesis papers to random reflection pieces. It's been interesting revisiting the things I used to think about, seeing how my perspectives have changed, how much the world has changed in less than a decade, and realising how rusty my writing has become in both English and Mandarin. It's a pity I didn't keep more of my secondary school essays too. I think I might have peaked somewhere between secondary school and my first two years of university, at least when it comes to writing.
Another hobby I've picked up again is cubing, after almost 10 years away. I started around 2015–16, when I was happy with a 30s+ average on sub-$5 Chinese cubes with a black face instead of white, before magnetic cubes were really a thing and Feliks was the GOAT. I came back to a world where the 3×3 world record is sub-3 and magnetic cubes are basically normal now.
